Worker Cooperatives in the News!
Jim Hightower Visits Madison and honors area Cooperatives
Union Cab and CROPP Higlighted on tour
The Texan populist Jim Hightower, whose commentaries run on WORT (89.9 FM) will appear on Saturday, April 5th at the Marriott Hotel and on Sunday April 6th at the Barrymore Theater to discuss his new book, Swim Against the Current.
Chapter 5 of the book focuses on the Union Cab of Madison Cooperative. Union Cab will celebrate 29 years of operation this year and was picked for the topic after a visit to Madison by Hightower. As the populist writer recounts, he was amazed to learn about the cooperative from his cab driver. He was impressed that a group of workers could take what many consider a dead-end job and turn it into something powerful and meaningful.
The other chapters feature area agriculture
coops such as CROPP (known at Organic Valley) and the San Francisco peep
show, The Lusty Lady.
