Madison Loves the Consumer

Consumer Coopeatives Have Rich History

Since the early days, consumer cooperatives have had a home in Madison.

In the Modern era, the 1960's saw a major increase in Consumer cooperatives, but today, the movement is burgeoning. Perhaps it is the high gas prices or the sense of locality, but new consumer cooperatives are springing up everyday!

Landmark Cooperative serves as one of the oldest, although it might be better described as a muli-stakeholder cooperative between farmers and consumers. It has previously existed as Cenex.

In the 1960's Mifflin Street Cooperative and Whole Earth Cooperative and Green Leaf Coop started. They helped get Williamson Street Grocery Cooperative.

The 1980's and 1990's saw a major contraction of the grocery industry and a major decrease in participation. However, since 2001, the movement has started to grow again. The Regent St. Coop started a few years ago. Today, there are new coops in Stoughton and Sun Prairie.
